Excessive Consumption

In Austria around 221,800 tons of textile waste end up in the garbage every year, it's around four kilos per capita. These numbers are increasing due to the Fast Fashion marketing strategy that leads to a decrease in the quality of textiles. Despite significant efforts in collection and sorting, with ongoing research by environmental agencies, everyone has the power to influence the situation by changing the opinion of consumption.

Through this project, I aim to visually demonstrate how thoughtlessly many of us acquire and accumulate unnecessary things. I propose taking a moment to think carefully about our textile waste and to help to move ahead mindful consumption considering recycling or donation.

Reflecting on recent experiences of moving, I gained an understanding of the spontaneity in acquiring many objects that just take up our living space. The issue of disposal and reuse prompted me to delve into this topic and once again focus on the problem's relevance. By asking a few simple questions before purchasing something new, we can already influence the situation.

Efforts to reduce textile waste are increasing, new strategies are being developed, and the exploration of recycled fiber usage continues. However, research predicts a further increase in textile waste, demanding ongoing attention.
