Figures collection:

The Transaction type: People.

Small faceless figures of a person stricken with a disease. The Figures are so tiny that they look like statuettеs from a bookcase of a doctor collector.

The photo poses are strange but natural for me, they are part of my secret life, the harsh truth I would hide from everyone.

Once I had an attack with episodes of violent muscle spasms in my University class and after that, I immediately became an outcast in the midst of my own people. Everyone began to avoid me: my ex-boyfriend, relatives and teachers, peers and friends. Two weeks after that incident, I was banished from the institute.

Throughout my life I have had to hide the disease, as well as go through complex rehabilitations that take several months.

During the entire period of attacks with episodes of violent muscle spasms and time for rehabilitation after them, I have to hide from people, disappear, and remain completely alone.

I started the «Figures collection: different version» in 2012. The number of figures in every collection corresponds to the number of periods of attacks with episodes of violent muscle spasms per month.

The Figures collection symbolizes a lonely distorted body, which does everything to keep a secret for life and save itself.

Often Mannequins and people with mental and neurological disorders become «The figures». Finding a model for a shoot is very difficult. Future models for the «figure collection» are given away by the «recognizable ability of their hands to take a distorted shape» — this is given only to those who also hide their illness from others.

On a walk with my camera I looked up on a museum building downtown and saw this silhouette of a couple, and I was just able to capture them before the moment was over.

When I was a kid growing up in Massachusetts, we used to visit our grandparents in Los Angeles each summer. They would take us down to Muscle Beach in Venice to watch the bodybuilders and buy us Arnold Schwarzenegger t-shirts, making us feel like the strongest kids in the world. That memory always…
