I was born and raised in Belarus, and I now call Berlin my home. It’s been four years since I last saw my mother, as I’ve been unable to return home due to the protests in Belarus in 2020 (my participation in them could result in me being declared a political prisoner). The distance has made me deeply reflect on the meaning of motherhood and the connections it fosters.
This photograph is of my dear friend Vasilisa and her two-week-old daughter. The theme of motherhood is both joyous and bittersweet for me—an emotional blend of longing, love, and admiration. As I document moments like this, I am reminded of my own bond with my mother, a connection that feels both distant and profoundly close.
